How to prepare for window replacement this winter

Michigan winter seems to be here, and early. The wintry weather may not seem like a good time to schedule a window replacement, but there are actually a few benefits in it for you. Keep an eye out for winter deals. If you’ve determined you need new windows or have a winter installation coming up, we have a few tips for you to keep in mind.

In the winter, installers will have to be extra careful and intentional, often replacing windows one by one instead of all at once, in the interest of mitigating home heat loss.

In the winter, installers will have to be extra careful and intentional, often replacing windows one by one instead of all at once, in the interest of mitigating home heat loss.

This expert advice comes straight from our Wallside pros Dave Ball and Carrie McClung:

1.    Make room for replacement

Make sure to leave about 5 feet around any window you will be replacing. Installers need access to the windows from the outside and inside, so give them enough space to work effectively. That also means taking down any artwork or photos from the wall they are working on and removing drapes and blinds. Clear the driveway, too.

2.    Switch rooms or plan an outing

The process to install windows may take longer because the installers take extra precautions and steps to minimize heat loss during the winter. Installers may take out windows one at a time instead of all out at once. So, if it’s an option, plan to spend time in other rooms, or consider an outing. Take the family to a movie. You’ll have new windows when you come back.

3.    Don’t forget pets and plants

House plants and animals need to be taken care of during this time of year. Place your plants where no windows are being removed, or cover them if they remain in the room. Relocate pets to a quiet room where work is not is being done – or send them on “a play date and see Grandma!” suggested Carrie.

4.    Be patient and flexible if things don’t go according to plan
