Adam Kelloway and his family bought their first home in Grandville, Michigan last fall. Among other improvements, he knew the home needed new windows. But Kelloway never imagined he might get a house full of new windows for free from Wallside Windows.
Wallside Windows and the Detroit Pistons collaborate to bring the Gift of Warmth giveaway to a family in need each winter. The program is in its second year. Earlier in 2020, Joel Manning nominated his step-son Adam Kelloway in the Wallside Windows Gift of Warmth program. He was thrilled to hear Kelloway would be receiving new windows.
“I never win anything, let alone win it for someone else,” said Manning.
If his stepfather was excited, Kelloway’s response was – initially - surprise. “In January my stepdad called me,” he said. “I had no idea. I thought he was joking at first!”
The lucky turn came about because Manning had hired Wallside Windows to replace the windows in his own home, a large farmhouse, four years ago. He was thrilled with the results and held the company in favor. While browsing online he came across the Gift of Warmth opportunity and submitted Adam’s name.
Kelloway and his wife have three children. For years they lived in a small apartment. Last fall, they saved up just enough to buy their first home.
“His primary goal, and all he wants in life, is to provide a safe, warm home for his family,” Manning wrote in Kelloway’s nomination. “Any help from Wallside Windows would be appreciated more than you could ever know and a huge prayer answered for him and his family.”
First and foremost, the windows were in need of replacement, noted Manning.
Kelloway described them as the original aluminum windows. An upstairs bedroom window had a hole in it. Others were painted shut or had broken latches or broken wood. Cold air was always coming through and he had to keep his heat on high just to combat the drafts and keep the family warm.
“We should definitely see our heating bills go down,” said Kelloway. “These are a lot more energy efficient. It will be nice to open the windows to get fresh air in.
Since the start of the year representatives from Wallside Windows have been working with the Kelloway family to measure, construct - and finally on March 19 - install the new windows. All nine windows in the home were replaced in less than 5 hours.
“They did a nice job,” said Manning. “(Adam) was desperately in need of new windows.”
The surprise also came with free tickets to a Detroit Pistons game earlier this year, thanks to Wallside’s partnership with the team. Wallside Windows is the designated “Official Window Company” of the Detroit Pistons.
“We are pleased to once again partner with the amazing team at Wallside Windows to make a true difference in our community,” said Charlie Metzger, executive vice president, chief revenue & marketing officer for the Detroit Pistons. “By working with Stanford and Adam Blanck, leaders of their family-run business for more than 75 years, providing the gift of warmth to deserving recipients is a perfect example of how partners can work together to amplify a shared mission of philanthropy.”
The Detroit Pistons Team, along with a surprise visit from Hooper, returned to the Kelloway home this month to deliver a gift basket, card and to assemble a new Wallside Windows-branded basketball hoop. The gifts included autographed Detroit Pistons merchandise and a video message from Luke Kennard.
Above all, the Kelloway family is thankful. “It was definitely a blessing,” Adam Kelloway said. “My wife and daughters are so happy.”
