Share holiday cheer through your home windows this year

When Royal Oak homeowner Lish Dorset began decorating for the holidays earlier this year, she focused on providing a dazzling view right from the front windows. It’s sure to make any window visits from family or friends that much more special as we safely navigate how to spend the holidays this year.

For Dorset and her husband Nick Britsky, the front-facing windows of their home have become even more important than they might’ve imagined through this pandemic. And when it comes time to replace those windows – or others in their home - Dorset says Michigan-based, family-owned Wallside Windows will be her go-to choice. “We’ve got an old home with lots of windows that need to be updated,” she admits.

For now, she’s glad to experiment with ways to make the most of the view from inside and outside their home.

“We always put our Christmas tree in the front bay window of our house as the main decoration focal point, but this year we added trees to be seen outside of our second-floor windows, too!” she says. “We also added my more lighting throughout our first floor to hopefully catch even more eyes from outside.”

This year, couple has used their front windows and front porch as a way to wave to friends and passers-by, to provide a safe space for a drop-off for packages and to thank essential workers who have made deliveries throughout the pandemic. Inside, Dorset says, they even rearranged furniture to make more seating areas closer to their windows as “a way to keep the outdoors a bit closer” in any season.

Placing holiday décor in view of a window gives it twice the impact. It can be enjoyed inside the home or looking in from outside, too.

Their home windows are also going to play an important role throughout the holidays, beginning this week as their families find a safe way to connect.

“We’re trying a progressive Thanksgiving meal for the very first time!” she says. “Each participating family has taken on part of the meal to drop off that day so that we can all enjoy our favorites - from our own homes.”

And it’s not just their own windows that have come to mean so much this year. The couple finds that the windows of their neighbors and friends’ homes also help keep their spirits high.

“During the summer we did a lot of walking, especially at night,” she says. “We love seeing how our neighbors used lighting to accentuate their front windows, porches and doorways.”

As the holiday season progresses, as snow blankets our neighborhoods, there’s sure to be even more holiday magic to catch a glimpse of – through all of our windows.
