75 Years with Wallside: Making the move to Taylor

Taylor Michigan is home to the Wallside Factory.

When Wallside Windows moved from two smaller Detroit buildings to its 72,000-square-foot Taylor, Michigan, factory in 1992, the company sent a message that growth was in its future.

“I remember walking into this building for the first time thinking how large it was and a sense of pride that the company I was working for was getting so big,” recalls Operations Manager David Ball, who ran the screen department at the time. “I think most other employees felt the same way as I did — just happy that we were making such a big move and really becoming a big name in the window business.”

The move was partially spurred by Wallside’s plans to eventually weld its products together rather than use screws. In 1999, the company was able to fully implement that plan. The move also allowed Wallside to increase production efficiency overall.

“We were in Detroit working out of two buildings that were side by side,” Ball says. “Not only did we need more room, but having things in two different buildings that had to come together to make one product was not good for production.”

That production efficiency has continued to evolve and allows Wallside to manufacture 800 replacement vinyl windows per day and service 25,000 customers per year throughout Michigan and northern Ohio. Its location makes covering that much ground easier too.

Ball says that Taylor felt like the right place for Wallside because it would be easy to service customers in all directions, including south to Ohio, but close enough to its original home that employees could follow the company. And follow the company they did.

“The move was 27 years ago and we still have about 15 factory and office people who work here – in addition to the owners - who worked at the Detroit building. Many others made the move but have since retired. We also have dozens of contractors, sales, installers and service people who are still here who made the move with us,” Ball says. “I have been here 32 years and I am still not in the top five in seniority. I think that says a lot about the owners and what type of company they have built for so many of us to not only have a job but a career here.”
